Booty Camp Diary: Hallelujah!

I’m admitting something kind of personal today, and it’s been a problem since I was a teenager. My knees hurt. But they don’t just hurt, they crack…loudly. And after visiting my doctor and two chiropractors to no avail, I was even tested for arthritis in my knees (at 25!). I had given up that they would ever get better and simply hoped they wouldn’t get any worse. As a mid-twenty-something, it’s really scary to have chronic pain in something as vital as my knees — I had visions of not being able to play with my future children, to need a cane in my 30’s or to even require surgery down the road! Plus, members of my family also have bad knees so I assumed it was genetic (ie. inevitable), which didn’t leave me with much hope. Until yesterday…

I sat down on the couch, and then immediately popped back up. Silence — no cracking. I tried it a few more times before calling my boyfriend in the room to witness. I didn’t tell him what was going on and simply demonstrated — he noticed the absence of cracking right away (that’s how loud it had been before)! No words can describe how relieved I am. I happily put a little extra oomph in my lunges yesterday at booty camp, and smiled quietly to myself while the other recruits groaned through another set. Oh, lunges if you were an animate thing I would kiss you!

I’m wondering if maybe through Booty Camp you’ve strengthened other muscles so that there is now less pressure on your knees. I have back problems but one of the things that has helped the most is doing core (abs) exercises. Now that my core is stronger it “holds up” my back better.

Keep up the hard work ;)

How do they test for arthritis? My knees used to crack all the time, and some one told me to eat more jello. He told me that he would put the jello powder into his morning shake and drink it, not too sure about that one. I did eat jello often already, but because I loved it as a “free” snack, the sugar free kind. My knees just stopped cracking on their own.
