The title of this post might sound dramatic but I’m not exaggerating in the slightest, and I can’t speak more highly about any other food or health blog out there. I first heard about the raw food movement in Sex and the City (when Samantha forces herself to eat cup after cup of “cold cucumber mush” to seduce Smith), and I went on my merry way after assuming that this “raw food stuff” was a trend. Until I discovered this recipe for Banana soft serve aptly entitled This Post Will Change Your Life (how can you resist clicking on something with that title?!). Milk and ice cream has always hurt my stomach, and until I started reading Gena’s blog I always just tried to tough it out or avoid whenever possible but I didn’t have to anymore because there was no dairy in this recipe — just a frozen banana! Incredible! I’ve since stopped drinking milk entirely and switched to almond milk instead.
The very next day I tried this recipe for chocolate pudding using cocoa powder and avocado (it tastes like dark chocolate pudding — way more luxurious than the packaged stuff) and I was hooked on raw food and Choosing Raw. Not only does Gena know A LOT about food and nutrition but she genuinely enjoys eating good food, and her recipes are very accessible (most of them don’t involve a dehydrator, fancy kitchen gadgets or hard-to-find ingredients…one of the fastest ways to turn me off a food blogger is when they consistently post recipes that require really obscure ingredients that are hard to find even in a big city like Toronto).
Another huge step for me was starting to eat breakfast — kind of. I was 12 years old when breakfast started to hurt my stomach, maybe it was the food I was eating (there was probably milk on my cereal in the morning) but that was around the time I stopped eating in the morning until just recently. Now I try to make a smoothie every morning, whether it’s the one I showed you here or the Date Almond smoothie from Fresh I find smoothies way easier on my stomach in the morning than the standard bacon, eggs and toast (think about that food combo for a moment. Protein + protein + carbs + morning = Dayna’s stomach hurts).
Have you come across any blogs that have changed your life? Please share! I’m always up for a little life-changing : )
Cheers,
Dayna
