7 etiquette tips to help you navigate the make-up counter and find the perfect beauty product for you.
Having good etiquette is way more than just knowing which fork goes where. Here are some quick etiquette guidelines when shopping for make-up:
- Take your time to look and if there is a make-up artist offering you service be polite and let them know you’re still looking or take the opportunity to ask them a question.
- It’s usually a good indication that if you like the way a colour looks on display you may like how it looks on, so try the tester on your hand. If you don’t like it on your hand, it’s probably not for you.
- If you want to try something on your face, get the attention of one of the make-up artists nearby and ask them to clean it for your safety. Often these make-up make-up artists will offer to apply the products for you when it is not busy.
- When asking a make-up artist questions about application of products, colour suggestions, style or trends be sure to respect their opinions and advice.
- The kind of make-up to choose depends on your comfort level and personal style. So instead of asking, ‶What would be best for me?″ ask more specific questions and tell the make-up artist about your make-up style to ensure that they are suggesting the correct product for you. Here are some questions they may ask you:
How do you feel about your skin?
How much coverage would you like? (I.e. Sheer, Medium, Full)
What type of finish would you prefer? (i.e. Satin, Natural, Matte)
- Many make-up stores will charge a service fee or ask for a minimum purchase to do your full face so be prepared to spend approximately $60 for a full face application in a store and up to $150 if you have a make-up artist come to you for a wedding or event.
- Always tip your make-up artist if you like their work. A make-up application is a service just like getting your hair done. You would always tip your hair stylist, treat your make-up artist with the same respect.

Do anyone know a good homemade sanitizing spray to use on make up. I’ve heard you can spray your blush, compacts and eyeshadow with some alcohol mix. Is this true?
I know there is a spray that you can buy at the Bay but I’ll look into what it is called.
For the most part you should only be concerned about sanitizing products if you’re a professional makeup artist because you’ll be using the products on other people.
It is More Important to sanitize your brushes by washing them at least once a month (I personally would say once a week) with a little mild shampoo and lay flat to dry. A great way to prevent bacteria in your brush is to make sure you never blow air onto them because saliva partials will land on the brush.
Also Never use makeup sponges for long periods of time. You should replace them at least once a week. But switching to a makeup brush maybe more cost effective in the long run because they can be washed.
But you should also know that Bacteria has a hard time growing on a powder product, which means that you don’t need to sanitize it. You could wipe it with a dry tissue if you’re concerned. You could also sanitized the outer container with a tissue lightly saturated with 70% Alcohol
For Mascara, Liquid Liner and Lip Gloss you should never share it with anyone and should replace it every 2-3 months.
Lip Sticks can be sanitized by dipping into 70% Alcohol and wiping with a dry tissue.
Pencils can be sanitized by dipping into 70% Alcohol then Sharpen and again dipping into 70% Alcohol followed by wiping with a dry tissue.
Check to see if any of your products have an experation date and if you are not sure you can always take it to the company who made it because they make check the batch code to see when it was made. The best way to tell if a product has expired is it smell it- if it smells different or off of what you originally remember it smelling like it is no longer safe to use. Usually I find they start to smell like Halloween Makeup Tubes.
