Now that the holidays are said and done, what have you to show for them? What were the memories that you’re happy to carry forward with you into this next decade, and what things are you looking to leave behind not just for another year, but for good?
I’m not a huge fan of resolutions (…and no, things you were already doing but want to reaffirm don’t really count!) …but I do see a point in making a personal commitment to yourself, on a continued and consistent basis. My personal commitment is to make plans that honour myself, and follow-through with them – on a daily basis, in addition to the long-term larger goals that are important to me. What most of us don’t realize, is that when we make personal choices, and then don’t follow through – it’s equal to bailing last-minute and with no notice on your very best friend. It’s as simple as saying in the morning that you’d like a steak dinner and actually treating yourself to it (…instead of bailing at 6pm because you’re too tired, and making Ramen instead!) By honouring your word to yourself, you strengthen your own integrity, boost your self-confidence and self-worth, and can therefore expect to be accountable with others and honour them fully in similar fashion. You’ll know when you’ve let yourself down – that feeling of personal guilt that we all try to numb ourselves, to – that’s the indication you’ve dishonoured the mini-You inside. It’s way too much for me to live silently with anymore, so although some days it’s okay for me to indulge in couch-sitting or potato chips, I tune in to the mini-me and see how I can make her happy… not just this time of year, but all the time now.
In what ways do you show self-love, and honour yourself? What personal commitments do you keep – and which ones do you let slide? Why is not following-through “acceptible” or “not okay” with you?
