I remember a time (seems so long ago now) when I wouldn't break up with a guy at all, I would just move on to the next guy & hope he figured it out. Yes... I was mean & self centered & I woud have loved text messaging for break-ups. But it is totally the cowards way out & it is disrespectful.

Generation A is a fab book. Great subject matter & very well written.

Thanks for the comment and the congrats!

From what I understand of the first situation the couple had been seeing each other for a few weeks (a couple of dates) and communicated mostly by phone/text & email. Since it wasn't really serious yet, the text message is kind of explainable. I think the issue there was more the brevity of the message (something along the lines of "Yo. catch u later") which is still lame. The second situation was a full out relationship where they had been dating for some time & were technically "boyfriend and girlfriend" (from what I understand). I feel like in this case you owe the person a bit more than just a text. I feel like if you can get naked with someone you at least owe them something more than a text but maybe I am just being old-fashioned. The third situation, I'm not sure of the details. I can say however that all parties involved are professionals in their late twenties/early 30's.

Congrats on your first column! Can't wait to read more!

Epic lamesauce indeed! In general, I think it's rude, but it's worth looking at the specifics of the situation. How old were the parties? (What's acceptable as a teenager isn't in your 30s.) Did the couple only go out once or twice so it wasn't a real relationship? Was their default mode of communication via text?

Man, I can definitely say that I've been in the email break up seat, and it sure is a crappy place to be. I think it's dangerous for us to disconnect from taking human responsibility for our human actions, and I think culture or not, it is only someone spineless and undignified who uses such a tool to make a significant action like that that involves people they claimed to once care for's hearts. Like it or not, the way we treat each other impacts ourselves (and I think it SHOULD!), and not having to hear the voice, or be honest with someone face to face is epic lamesauce.
